# 82393/27/10I have 8 completed films as a writer/director/prodcuer and have landed a producer’s rep from USA who is convinced he can get me DVd, VOD and probably TV sale. Now how do I go about landing a contract with a US production company for finance and distribution? stipulations can negotiated. going by my history, I can pull 4 movies every year and I intend to do that for 10 years. Gururaj Stan Brooks

# 82223/7/10Hi Stan - Myself and my producing partner are currently putting the finishing touches on our presentation material for our potential investors and are seeking an answer to a query: when the profits from a film are paid to the coffers of a funding corporation, are there additional federal tax incentives available if those profits are used to support a charity or cause? Thanks in advance for any info you can provide! Stan Brooks

# 81971/27/10I have the online version of the Hollywood creative directory, and I have a television pilot and a feature script ready to roll, so my question is, will it be easier for me to shoot straight for the production companies to sell my material? Or, simply find an agent? Stan Brooks

# 81911/18/10Hi Stan: Thanks for answering my question from the other day. I spoke with my Producer who said that a director he knew was busy right now, but that he would send my script to him when his schedule lightened up. This is a slow process isn't it?? I do have in my agreement that I can submit else where..I thought Hollywoodlitsales would be a good place to help with that. Thanks... Stan Brooks

# 81901/15/10Thanks Stan. If you'd like to take a look at my script, that would be great. It's called Full Redemption and the basic premise is a modern day guy who travels back in time to discover he has a very unusual connection with James Dean! Thanks for your advice as well. Kevin Stan Brooks

# 81891/15/10Hi Stan: I have written a very touching story that is a TV type movie. I have a Producer who has an option for one year to shop it around. I also can shop it around to other Producers. A few months back, he got upset with me because I guess I checked in with him too much. How often should I check in? Every few months? Thank you Stan Brooks

# 81378/31/09Hello ~ An indy producer is interested in one script of mine, wants to buy it outright and indicated he'd also like to direct it. I saw his website, and his direction appears very amateurish. I want this to hit the big time (and so does he)... My question is - before I hand over my baby, how can I diplomatically suggest that that he find a better director? Stan Brooks

# 81278/2/09Dear Stan, I am a producer in the UK working on a feature to be shot in the US next year. We are casting the movie now and have A list interest. We are looking around for finance of any sort, including small investors. Do you have any advice on where to look? Stan Brooks

# 81247/17/09Mr. Brooks, thanks for the info. Though, Kentucky Derby Race just isn't my style. Either way, I still feel with good connections--which I have--I can convince anyone I could make them Money on my piece. You can check a short film I performed in on YouTube Entilted PEN CHASE under the Jacob Storms version. I am also a published poet so hope that counts for something. Thanks. Stan Brooks

# 81237/17/09Mr. Brooks, I am looking to both present my script, as well, as myself to play the part. I know'd be VERY HARD to find a production company or big producer to greatly consider this. As well, few people I know who could also play the part. Knowing them personally I was able to create their character perfectly. Being a smalltime filmaker I'm very picky so it wasn't any personal favors. Any help? Stan Brooks

# 81227/16/09Mr. Brooks, I have looked at MANY sites trying to find auditions/writers needed for new&big upcoming sitcoms. To be honest, I haven't seen any as good as some of the old classic sitcoms. I was curious about how to present my idea or find auditions pertaining to this manner. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks. Stan Brooks

# 81167/13/09How does a young African-American male who lives in Virginia with no connections attempts to sell his screenplay? I know its about who you know, but how do I even get to that point without spending a lot of money with an already jacked-up economy? How can I succeed with hollywood always using the same old retread writers and agents scared to take a chance on new writers? Help me out here!! Stan Brooks

# 81107/6/09RE: 8105 Hi Stan, Thanks for the reply. No, I don't have an agent. That's one of the challenges I'm attempting to overcome and hoping you can guide me in. Both agents I dealt with at WMA are no longer there as WME has been doing a major clean up. One of them did tell me to use their comments and try more intimate agencies. Any advice on how to approach them? Thanks, Esty. Stan Brooks

# 81057/6/09Hi Stan, I've been contacted by a Director who wants to buy my script. However, his offer is very low and he wants to do it for $1.5 million, when it was written as a big budget actioner. I've had a few people read the script at WMA and have gotten great responses. I would like to use this as leverage to get the script sold. What's the best way to do this? Thanks, Esty. Stan Brooks

# 80646/10/09If you were down to your last 100 bucks and had what you believed to be an exceptional screenplay would you: A. Enter it in a screenplay contest. B. Use a service that would send out an e-mail(query) to hundreds of industry pros. C. Pay for coverage of the screenplay. Stan Brooks

# 80141/29/09Sir, I have the ability to direct movies without scripts but just outlines. I can schedule and budget on the basis of an outline and then complete the production. so far all of my productions have followed the same pattern. Is it impossible to find investors for such kind of film-maker even on low-budgets in the US? regards, Gururaj Stan Brooks

# 80001/3/09There are some 7 festivals where in your screening leads to eligibility for Independent Spirit award. What is the next step? I mean after eligibility how do we proceed towards nomination? Regards, Gururaj Stan Brooks

# 798012/2/08Stan, a notable talent agency in China wants to know the status of my feature script/project. They know I'm a recent film graduate with only my script; the reason why this agency contacted me in the first place? They want to know my estimated budget and if I have any producer(s) in the States interested in my script? I don't know how to reply to their email. Any advise? Stan Brooks

# 797111/12/08If I was inspired by a given actor/actress for my screenplay, does it make sense to send it to them and if so, how do find the contact information for an actor or their agent? Margot Stan Brooks

# 79299/16/08Hi Stan, I've been approached by a co-worker to write a script about his “Iraq" experience of which he documented more than 200 pages while there. Now I’m torn between my completed passion project which I’m told I should now to turn into a novel, my next, high budget, recently started passion project (some'g never done before), and this one. Since time does not allow me to do all of the above. Advice? Thanks, Esty. Stan Brooks

# 79138/24/08Hello, Mr. Brooks. I have two questions about the profit participation. First, do executive producers (who work in a film studio) get a cut of back-end profits of the film they were working on? And, what should an independent film producer, who is producing his film with a major studio, do to get a cut of back-end profits in a contract? Provide financial support from other sources, or attach a well-known talent to the project? Stan Brooks

# 78938/1/08Hello. I've been doing rewrites on one of my scripts as per request of a producer who seems really interested in it. He hasn't optined the script yet, or offered any money, and I'm beginning to wonder if I'm being taken advantage of. How should I approach this? Should I continue to oblige him with rewrites with no money or am I crazy to do this for free? Stan Brooks

# 78344/30/08Stan, thanks for the 7824 advice. We spoke and scheduled a time to get more into where I'd like to go with the script, and what I want out of them. She inquired whether I want to direct it myself, and my openness to the indie market. She said that I have "something really good and interesting that can go places, we just need to discuss what they are and how to get there." Your thoughts? Stan Brooks

# 78244/28/08Hi Stan, A few months ago a friend submitted my script to the William Morris Agency. It was passed on to their leading NYC Motion Picture Agent. I received positive feedback w/some notes via email requesting a few changes to make it studio ready. I did. It was sent to their LA Motion Picuture Agent who now wants to speak via phone. I'm a bit nervous and want to be prepared. Any suggestions? Thanks, Esther. Stan Brooks

# 78224/27/08Hello. In 2005, I wrote a script for a producer for which I was paid 1000 dollars(this guy makes films that cost 750K - 1M). I did several rewrites for no money. Now he's ready to film project and wants me to sign another document. Question: Would I be out of line if I told him "I'm not going to sign another document unless I get more money?" Stan Brooks

# 77502/20/08Do you do non-union movies? I have budgeted 4 films to a production budget of $500,000 each and marketing budget of $2,000,000 each (including setting up a table at AFM to land a sales agent and 250 print US theatrical self-distribution). Can you help me with this? Regards, Gururaj Stan Brooks

# 77191/16/08If I were to make a very low budget movie either feature length or short film, oppose to just trying to sell a screenplay, would I have a better chance in getting an agent, pitching to studios or production companies--seeing how hard it is to sell a script in the first place? Stan Brooks

# 77081/15/08What are my chances of selling, pitching a reality show concept to producers, agents or production companies? Is selling a reality show concept easier than trying to sell a screenplay? And how with this current writers strike will effect my process? Stan Brooks

# 77011/5/08Hello, Mr. Brooks. I am writing you to ask a question and I hope you'll find time to help me. Can an executive film producer hire a screenwriter to write a script, which is based on his (producer's) own ideas? If yeas, how much does usually a film producer pay to hired screenwriter? Stan Brooks

# 76991/4/08Mr. Brooks, thanks for the professional response. But I actually know very little about the job of a producer. Could I even produce my first written film or are there steps in becoming a producer? Does it take money? And at what age would be most appropiate to becoming a producer? As you said, almost anything is possible, but some things may require limits. Jacob Stan Brooks

# 76971/3/08Mr. Brooks, as a screenwriter what would it take to become the cast director of your own work? Can it be done or a can a contract be made? You see, when I picture my script I picture my cast. When I picture my cast I picture my script. They're both one to me. Is there any way or someone who could help me? Jacob Stan Brooks

# 767112/11/07I keep reading that the first step for new producers is to get a great script in their hands. What do you do once you have the script? Stan Brooks

# 75029/18/07I am preparing my first budget and although most is self explanatory, what are fringe benefits and how are they worked out? Stan Brooks

# 74939/6/07Hi Stan, A friend submitted my script to someone at the William Morris Agency, after it made it to the PAGE Quarter-Finals. The friend replied that it’s better then 95% of the usual stuff. “It’s riveting, gripping, and touching”. She sent it to their top agent in Hollywood. They replied with “a really good read”, and sent me extensive and encouraging notes with a request for major alterations in preparation for a studio-read. Your thoughts? Thanks,Esher. Stan Brooks

# 74889/4/07How do I make money on the side as a new producer while my own film projects is still in development stages? Stan Brooks

# 74408/1/07I am not a screenwriter, but I have written several treatments for my story ideas already. So my question is...How do I go about scheduling a pitch meeting with any producers or studios? How much money are they're offering for just selling your story ideas? Stan Brooks

# 74397/31/07My script won finalist awards in two competitions. I've sent it to film talent agents per request. I didn't target TV because it is a period script, mid-to-high range budget and has graphic violence related to the setting. I didn't consider HBO, History channel, networks etc. How big of a factor is budget in TV film decisions if the story is strong? The concept/topic has never been done. Thank you, Kang Stan Brooks

# 74387/31/07I am a "new" writer with a script accepted to a major agency for possible packaging. It is out in coverage, sent by them. Do the major agencies have coverage in-house? How does packaging work if you are an un-agented writer.i.e. Not sure what to expect in this process. Thank you, Andrea Stan Brooks

# 73686/16/07On the WGA West website it said that you don't have to be in the western US to register a script. What is the difference between the east and west branches of the WGA. Is it better to get your work registered by the WGA or the U.S. Copyright Office. Stan Brooks

# 73596/15/07Being a rookie/unknown producer how would I join a film project in development (or pre-production already) that I am very interested in? How do jump aboard another producer's film project? Any rules to this? Stan Brooks

# 73466/12/07RE: #7336 A woman in the mental institution died and it was classified as a heart attack. An autopsy report said that she was beaten to death. She had a black eye, 4 missing teeth and her legs, face and torso were severly bruised. The coroner arrived just 10 minutes after her death (pretty fast) and her body was badly decomposed 15 hrs after her death. My story expands on this with fiction. Stan Brooks

# 73456/11/07How would I go about to get a one of my favorite film producers on board in one of my future film projects? Any way to get their mentoring or industry advice? Stan Brooks

# 73446/11/07How do "NEW" film producers with no real money manage in the industry with real big maverick producers until their big enough? Also with no real money to get high concept scripts or books? Stan Brooks

# 73366/11/07RE: #7320 Do I need to do anything if it was written about in 2 (at least) local newspapers in 1945. Stan Brooks

# 73286/10/07I am a rookie film producer, the question is, how to I get a film project that a studio may have sheleved or put in turnaround and convince them to greenlight it because it will be profitable? Stan Brooks

# 73206/9/07I am writing and directing a screenplay based on a local legend that took place at a mental institution that has been torn down. The events (which make the backstory, not the main plot) are based on research and the characters are fictional. What do I need to do, if anything, to aquire rights to the story. The events have never been proven to have actually happened. Stan Brooks

# 73015/29/07Hi Stan, A producer read my synopsis on another popular screenwriting site and asked for a recent copy. He has produced one film about two years ago, but not much credentials. If he wanted to rip me off, he could've just downloaded my script without the email, but I'm still a little wary. My script is registered. Am I being too paranoid? Are there things I should do before I send it? Thanks. Stan Brooks

# 72825/17/07Can you please tell me witch company Paul de Souza works for?, he wants me to send him my script. Stan Brooks

# 72775/11/07Hey Stan, uh...my question is this, I've written my screenplay and now I need help with my outline after the fact, I have a general idea about how to write it, I was just wondering if there was a site where I could view an outline? I feel I just need to see a standard outline and then I would be able to write mine. Thanks T. Stan Brooks

# 72725/4/07I live in the middle of PA. I write poems, stories, screenplays; whatever comes to mind. Even if I wouldn't want to be a screenwriter and move to NYC or LA, should I keep writing screenplays, then send them out to agencies when they're 100 percent done? Or am I wasting my time? Stan Brooks

# 72594/25/07Sir, Sometime ago you had said that you had purchased treatments from new writers. Will you please show me the one that you liked and purchased it as I need to know how an ideal treatment looks like (the format)? Regards, Gururaj Kishan Deshpande Stan Brooks

# 72474/19/07Stan, what if the answer is YES? Based in Israel, the organization is pretty unique and world renowned for its humanitarian efforts. The volunteers are also of very unique traits. So, although the story and its characters are fictional, and will take place in the fictional near future, those who are a part of it may see themselves in the fictional characters on screen. So, what’s the industry protocol? Thanks, Esty. Stan Brooks

# 72464/18/07Stan, thank you for your heartwarming response on writing what you’re passionate about. I would like to write a story about an amazing organization and the lives of its volunteers. Their website contains an abundance of information regarding its missions. I can easily develop fictional characters, for I personally know the type of people that work there. Do I need to get permission from the organization to do the project? Esty. Stan Brooks

# 72434/17/07RE: 7234. Stan, I appreciate your guidance and agree completely. Personally, the only way I can write it is if I’m passionate about it. The thing is, the story I truly want to write is a high budget project. And from what I understand, for un-produced writers, high budget almost impossible to sell. Thank you, Esty. Stan Brooks

# 72424/17/07RE: 7234. Stan, one story is based on a memory of someone who passed away. Amazingly inspiring and touching. The second, somewhat of a biblical legend with a supernatural/fantasy element. On the lines of splitting of the red sea. To the skeptics a fantasy. To the faithful and movie audience a possibility. Both are personal. One holds a place in my heart and the other in my soul. Therein lies the dilemma. Stan Brooks

# 72344/16/07Hi Stan, I'm about to start my next script. I have written several log lines of different genres and would like my next project to have more success than my fist one, that hasen't had any since it's completion two months ago. The two I'm leaning to the most are a fantasy adventure with a hefty budget, and a drama set during ww2 with natzi elements inspired by a true story. Any suggestions? Thanks, Esty. Stan Brooks

# 72284/7/07A extras casting agency is looking for local talent to "act" in a upcoming feature film that is being filmed in my city. The have asked for a photo and contact information. What type of photo should I send? an 8X10? B/W or color? Headshot or full body shot? What else should I send? .I have no experience. Thanks. Stan Brooks

# 72203/26/07Hi Stan, Do you know what the process is for writing a biopic? Do you get the permission of the person you want write about first and then contact a studio before starting on the script or get the person's permission, do whatever necessary research and interviews, then write the script before contacting a studio? Any insight into any of that would be great. Thanks, Joe Stan Brooks

# 72073/20/07re#7174, after a lot of thinking, What if I were to distribute the film myself? i.e. I’d spend $500K on production and $1.5 million on 250 print release US domestic release? It does guarantee distribution. will the banks give me loan then? Regards, Gururaj Deshpande Stan Brooks

# 71983/19/07With the way the industry is today, is it safe to say with websites like Youtube & Myspace that agents and producers will notice you more if you made your own film from your script, rather than trying to sell your screenplay solely? Stan Brooks

# 71873/19/07Is it easier to win the lottery than it is to sell a screenplay? LOL. Oh, yeah, I brought the Hollywood Creative Directory and went through the WGA. That was a wast of time. If these agents and producers aren't taking on new writers, then what's my next step? Stan Brooks

# 71773/19/07Is it true that its impossible to sell a spec script these days because the spec market is low right now? And how many spec scripts with african-american themes have been sold in in the last year? And do I have to live in los angeles to even sell a script these days? Stan Brooks

# 71743/15/07In India there are these private banks that fund up to $400K equivalent of Indian rupees with any security. I plan to take loan from bank. Do banks in America also provide loans for films? I would like to take a loan of $2000000USD in the US to make my films. Is it true that the banks send their own production managers? regards, Gururaj Deshpande Stan Brooks

# 71663/12/07Hi Stan, your guidance finally got feedback from an agency. The asst informed me she spoke with the manager who read my script; he enjoyed the writing and would be interested in reading something else of mine. The problem: it's my 1st completed project. I'm currently working on my next 3 which are a couple of months from completion. How should I respond? Stan Brooks

# 71553/1/07RESPONSE 7141: Just want to make sure I hear you. If I wrote a good Grey's spec, it would be good in getting an agent, then later pitching (writing) specs for OTHER shows. Does that mean the agent wouldn't sell the Grey's Anatomy I first wrote? You also said GREY'S won't read a spec of their show but might read one for HOUSE, ER. Why would they read a script that's not about GREY'S? Stan Brooks

# 71522/28/07Thanks for everything. Appreciate it. I would WRITE A SPEC SRIPT for HOUSE, then, try to give my GREY'S ANATOMY scripts a chance. I would have to brush up on HOUSE. Never saw it. I like to be more of a FREELANCE WRITER. Writing what I want. TV, Grey's, ER, Dirt. Even shows I don't watch. Ugly Betty, Reba. Just got to be lucky to write stuff people won't be able to turn down. Stan Brooks

# 71512/28/07RESPONSE TO 7141. I've been told it would be better to write a spec for House for some reason. What is better, to write a spec for a show that hasn't been around as long, or one that has? Should I keep writing these two specs I was writing for Grey's Anatomy. Or is it a waist of time if your chances of getting it looked at are very slim? Stan Brooks

# 71462/28/07Hi Stan, I sent a script to a high level producer. 2 weeks after submitting the script, his asst. said the script will probably go into a weekend read and she will call me. 2 weeks later, I f/u again: "still not had their meeting to discuss the scripts with the interns" - will call once the verdict is in. Now, 2 wks later, nothing. How should approach the asst at this point? Stan Brooks

# 71412/26/07I have been coming up with ideas for Grey's Anatomy and wrote the first two pages of a script. Is it okay for someone who isn't apart of that show, let alone in the movie business, write their own script, then send it to an agency? I would imagine they pitch to the studio in charge of Grey's. If your lucky the staff for Grey's want it. Or is writing it a bad idea? Stan Brooks

# 71052/6/07Hi Stan, Thanks for all your help. I just got a request for the first twenty pages of my script in response to a targeted e-query from a producer. He requested I email them to him. Should I send him just the first twenty pages or the entire script with a line in the email saying something like "I decided to send you the whole script in case you'll really want to keep reading it"? Stan Brooks

# 71012/6/07Hi Stan, Got 4 requests to see my script. 2 via mail and 2 via email. One production co, said the script will probably go into a weekend read and that she, the asst, will call. The via email co's never replied to the email in which I requested a time to follow up. The Agency said someone will call only if there's an interest. My Q's is what's the procedure now? Thanks. Stan Brooks

# 70881/31/07Hi, Stan! All creative people blabber oftentimes about the idea of "High Concept". But, really, who defines (also who has the right to define) that someone's idea exactly is "High Concept"??? Thanks! Stan Brooks

# 70741/25/07Hi Stan, I've applied your advice to direct and personalized e-queries and have gotten a couple of positive replies. A big time production co. and an agency want to see my script. My Q's is what's the best mailing method for script submission? Fed Ex, UPS? Next day?Does it have to be registered so that I would have physical proof? Thanks in advace. Stan Brooks

# 70611/18/07RE: 7056. Thanks again for your time. Actually, I started working on my second script and have tried to split the time between marketing/research and writing/research. What do you feel is the best way to get an agent/manager? Cold call then query, or simply query? Also, should the query be different from one submitted to production co's. If I do call then should I just pitch my current script? Stan Brooks

# 70601/18/07Having written a 70 page comedy, in book form, (on 11 by 8 paper, single spaced), was wondering if the best avenue for to get it into movie production was to do a book first. I am not an expert at screenplay writing. With this being able to become a sequel, would selling it as a book first would give me the most dollars as first doing it as a script? Stan Brooks

# 70561/17/07Hi Stan, thanks so much for your past advice. I wanted to get your opinion on query submission and cold calling production companies that do movies in my genre. Can I succeed withoug cold calling. I ask b/c cold calling is very time consuming and makes me a bit anxious. In short, what is the best marketing method? Stan Brooks

# 70451/10/07Re:7042. Stan, thanks for the quick reply. I want to clarify my question. I was refering to sites like scriptblaster that claim to e-mail your logline and synopsis to over 2,000 agencies and production companies contained in their database. What's your take on that? Stan Brooks

# 70421/9/07Stan, I recently submitted and posted on a couple reputable sites my first script and am now looking for the best ways to get it into the right hands. I've come across several mass query/e-query sites offering amazing results for a $85 dollors and up. I would like to get your advice before spending money on these sites: How reputable are they? And do they really deliver? Any suggestions on which work best? Stan Brooks

# 701512/27/06I'm an African-American writer, and this is my first time attempting a novel or screenplay. Which of the two would you recommend? Which one would I have a realistic shot of success in? And I only have time just for one? I need help Stan Brooks

# 701312/25/06I just sent the first draft of my screenplay out to an agency. They responded by mailing my draft back to me, paying the five dollar shipping fee. They also stated that if I sent them anymore material they would steal my ideas. Is this common in the industry? Stan Brooks

# 698112/4/06I have a story I want to send to Playboy Magazine. Would it be a good idea to send it to the WGA, first? Stan Brooks

# 697712/3/06Hello Stan. I just had coverage done on my script and I was told it needed to be formated properly. Can you tell me if Movie Magic software is available in Canada?, I was also told I needed to bring the dramatic and emotional potential to the fullest in the story. Can you tell me how I can do this to improve the rewrite. Stan Brooks

# 696411/27/06I saw on imdb.com you havedone a lot of TV movies. Good job. I also saw one is a short film "Child's Play." I noticed some of you films are drama. Do you still short films? I have one that's drama. Stan Brooks

# 696111/25/06RESPOSE: 6957. You said, "Selling the underlying rights to the material." Is that the actual rights to the screenplay? I heard Craven sold Nightmare-Elm St., later sold the rights. I have one script, but am not going to send it until I write the sequel. Stupid, considering I didn't sell the first one yet and no idea if it will be major. Why would they make a sequel for something that didn't do well? Stan Brooks

# 695711/24/06If I sold a script, would that mean the company that bought it has all rights to the property, or are they something you sign away after it's purchased (If you want to sign them away)? Would this include shories? I want to send a story to a magazine but don't know if I still have all rights, if accepted. What if I (in future) wanted to make a screenplay-book of the story? Stan Brooks

# 692211/13/06Hi, Stan. I have begun to plot stories for a supernatural/action animated series that I see possibly integrating into the WB's Saturday morning lineup, but I have no idea how pitch a series idea, especially one like this, to the company--they seem to produce primarilly series based on DC Comics characters. Any suggestions? Or should I just reconsider? Thank you for your time. Stan Brooks

# 691511/6/06I have a great idea for a movie and I started writing the screenplay, but I find myself slowing down and not working on it because I am told that it's too hard to get someone of importance to read it. How can i get my screenplay viewed by someone who has connections? any tips ? Stan Brooks

# 689210/15/06Okay! Glad I asked! I'll practice seated. I'm so glad you told all of us, at your seminar, about this resource. I've gotten great help with my screenplay format questions from Mr. Flashner, ie.. how to clearly show a SFX. Thanks, JoJo Stan Brooks

# 688110/13/06Thanks for clearing that up, my brain was lurching there. Is it bad form to stand and pitch, even pace? I'm just kind of excited abou the whole thing. I know it is important to keep eye contact etc. Oui, justement, c'est (raison d'etre). Merci encore. JoJo Stan Brooks

# 687810/13/06Hi Stan Brooks, Am a new writer, who just know how to write good stories for movies, but done know how to write the script, what do you think i should do. Is there any link i can go too. Thanks agian Michael Stan Brooks

# 687710/12/06In a pitch to sell a project. After the concept is addressed. When the characters are laid out.. can you TOUCH on their(reason de etre)in the scheme of things, or is that getting into plot territory. Do you just say Sammy 22, buff, is getting his PHD in rocket science? Sally 25, anorexic, is a waitress at Moonshadow. With something like "Pirates", how would you pitch all those mains, window characters, antagonists etc. Thx, JOJO Stan Brooks

# 687010/9/06When pitching to Agencies at a "pitch expo" is it best to (1) focus your pitch on one screenplay, or (2) convey your style/"voice" and support this by referencing 3-4 concepts in your repetoire? Thanks in advance for your guidance. Harris. Stan Brooks

# 685410/1/06 Stan, I'm auditioning to be the host of a fashion profile show. I have to submit a 2 minute reel showing why I should host. I thought I'd interview a new designer ,I've come to realize my treatment isn't original. Can you give me suggestions for a bangin reel ?! Stan Brooks

# 68449/30/06I know its about the story, but I want to find information on other black screenwriters in Hollywood. Every magazine, screenwriting workshops, self-help professionals seems to be all white. I want to know where I can find out about minorities who have sold or even option a screenplay. Any minority screenwriting professionals around. I just want to know because it seems to be a lack of them. Stan Brooks

# 68339/30/06I have a script that has a lot of voiceover similar to "Goodfellas" & "Casino". Is using VO helpful in a spec script? Or, just say the hell with the industry standards and craft it the way I wanted it be? And...is there a certain style of writing a script? Stan Brooks

# 68219/29/06Can you write and sell a treatment instead of the actual screenplay? Stan Brooks

# 68139/26/06This is such a great resource! I was thinking along those lines, but I thought it might seem a bit eccentric. Thanks again! I may take your seminar again to see if I get picked to pitch ya! You engender mucho trust because you tell the truth about things and how to really make it work. I could see that in your photo in the Learning Annex Mag, strange. See ya, Spike Strange Stan Brooks

# 68089/24/06Thank you so much for your help. Now I have to figure out how to PERSONALIZE my interest in vampirish monsters, magic, immortality, supernatural powers, stuff blowing up and eye candy for a pitch.. uh that wouldn't be for the Food Network.. JoJo Stan Brooks

# 68079/23/06A Reality Show question! Don't hyperventilate! I am curious about The Food Network and The Style Network. I have a relative, who Assoc. Produces a food show and my neighbor Supervising Prod. a house cleanup show. I have a few ideas! Are these considered reality shows? Do you pitch them the same way a drama is pitched, of course, replacing the drama (CAR) elements with relevent episodic content? Thanks, Spike Stan Brooks

# 68069/22/06Your Learning Annex Seminar, at the Doubletree was AWESOME! The pitch info, amazing! The car, the passengers, and all drive around my brain mapping my new concept. I finished the third draft of a feature and am still wrestling with the Logline. My question is literary, which is better.... he must embrace ancestral magic... or.... he must embrace his ancestral magic...? If it's ancestral it is already his, right? Or not? Thanks, Spike demographic... Stan Brooks

# 68029/21/06Stan, Stan, Stan, I wanted to thank you for the wonderful seminar on "Pitching." I attended the Learning Annex seminar on 9/20/06 and thought you were very generous with your time and information. Question - what is the BEST way to get an interview for a job at Once Upon a Time Films? I have no problem starting in the mailroom. Stan Brooks

# 67999/20/06For an aspiring writer how would I go about writing stories for magazines? Short things. Like, a half a page long, longer. However long the story is. How could I go about this? I don't know if they would only give you a check if they published it or if they would because you wrote something and sent it in. I think it would be good. Like a little experience for myself. Getting published. Stan Brooks

# 67739/17/06What should be the max of pages of a short script? Who buys them? And how much are they usually sold for? Stan Brooks

# 67509/4/06RESPONSE TO 6745. Are you saying these days it's hard to come up with a sitcom or have companies read it? Or it's hard to get them made or have them be a big hit? Or just saying people with lots of credits in sitcoms would likely be taken on? Would it be better to come up with and write a daytime drama series like, DAYS OF OUR LIVES? Stan Brooks

# 67459/3/06If I wanted to write a comedy show, example: something like friends. How much of it should I write? The pilot show, plus a couple episodes? I always see the creator as one of the producers in the credits of the tv shows I watch. To be the start of a TV show would I have to be one of the producers? I see that most creators are one of many producers. Stan Brooks

# 67449/2/06I love writing. But am unsure about one thing. I am writing horror right now. Let's say magic happened for them. Later, I wanted to write a different genre. Like, a romance, a documentary, comedy. Would that look somewhat bad to an agent and production companies if you have credits in the horror genre and wanted to write a romance, comedy, documentary? Stan Brooks

# 67428/29/06RESPONSE TO 6741. That's weird. I was gonna ask you the same question. I have ideas for a similiar project to FRIDAY THE 13th and the Jason movies. There's a person, slashing and dashing, a lake, I'm not sure if this person is going to die or not. I wouldn't want to be sued for plagarism even though this has nothing to do with those movies. Advice? Stan Brooks

# 67418/29/06Mr. Brooks- I am waist-deep in a script that I love. I imagined modestly that I'd be dubbed the next Charlie Kaufmann. This week I discovered that a near identical film is being released in fall (featuring a major star) and the script has been called Kaufmannesque. Chagrin! There were no plagiarisms committed, on either side, I just got inspired too late. Advice? Thanks. Stan Brooks

# 67308/22/06Does it matter how many words are in the whole script? I did a count and counted 12 thousand words in one of my screenplays. Who would care how many words, right?Any advice? Stan Brooks

# 67218/18/06RESPONSE TO 6720. I didn't mean sell to a different studio. If I wrote a script, sold it to a company. It was lucky to sell but it didn't get made. If I wrote another script, could I take scenes from the script I wrote before that didn't get made, and put those scenes in the one I am writing now? Hope that clears things up. Stan Brooks

# 67208/18/06RESPONSE TO 6718. I was speaking for a FREDDY VS. JASON 2 I started writing. Also, if I wrote a script, it sold but didn't get made. Could I get in trouble if I had ideas for something else and wanted to use the same scenes from the one I sold for this script? Or no because the company owns it now? Stan Brooks

# 67188/18/06I've seen where there are many screenplays of the same movie, written by different people. Do production companies look at more than one screenplay for a certain movie. For instense, I saw 5 screenplays written for FREDDY VS. JASON by different writers. Could you write a screenplay for something, try to sell it, even if they have a script for it? Stan Brooks

# 67168/17/06Hi, Stan. I have written a screenplay and am starting on another one. Writing the screenplay doesn't seem as hard as trying to write a synopsis. Even though a synopsis is only a couple paragraphs long. Is this normal to feel this way about writing a synopsis? To me, it's already the biggest pain in the butt. Stan Brooks

# 67028/13/06Can you help me decide in which screenwriting software is better. Is it Final Draft? Or, Movie Magic? Stan Brooks

# 66928/13/06About the screenwriting Expo5 that's coming in October. Is it the place to be for inexperience writers to network an make that connection? Or, is it a waste of my time, because I will only be dealing with is low-level employees--which I've been hearing lately. Help me out before I make that decision to travel across country. Stan Brooks

# 66908/13/06Hi again Stan, Thanks for your quick answer 8/7/06. Do you maybe know if there are any “pitch sessions” going on in L.A during September month? Kind regards, Biljana Stan Brooks

# 66828/7/06Hi Stan. I am a Swedish woman who will arrive in L.A.1st of Sept with my two original written screenplays. Can I meet with you if the contact goes through Howard M. I have written to him but nothing yet. Is there any other way I could book a meeting and do you have any other email to Howard.M? Matt Terry, from Seattle has read my loglines and thinks the ideas are interesting/good. Thanks. Stan Brooks

# 66667/30/06I have an idea for a half-hour show which would likely be a fit on cable due to subject matter & language. It's based on my interactions with a real person. Where can I find info on what should be included in the treamtment? Also, could the person on whom I base the main character have any legal recourse against me in the future? Thank you. Stan Brooks

# 65936/9/06There are alot of self-help courses or coverages that claims will make your screenplay get into the doors of studios or producers for crazy prices that is the amount of car payments. And there are people who actually pays it and still come up empty-handed. Do we actually need this? Are they being scamed? And if not, are there affordable ones for the poor? I thought formatting, grammar and a great story only matters. Stan Brooks

# 65836/9/06Is it easier to sale a screenplay outside of Los Angeles nowadays Stan Brooks

# 65726/9/06If you're lucky enough to sell your first screenplay, could you use that first sell as a springboard for more work? Would you be able to sell another spec script or a pitch even if the script that you sold wasn't the talk of the town aka "Bidding War"? Or, could your first sell be your only sell? Meaning...you just got lucky, collect your money, retire and get out of town. Stan Brooks

# 65566/2/06Hi Stan. Are there any representation agencies that will let you sbmit your script without mailing them a query first? Thanks. Stan Brooks

# 65416/1/06Should some "Voice Over" dialect be used in a spec script? Or none at all? Stan Brooks

# 65316/1/06Does Hollywood buy stageplays? If so, who buys them and where can I get information, and what is the average sell of a stageplay if one is sold? Stan Brooks

# 65306/1/06Does Hollywood buy stageplays? If so, what are the average profits when one is sold. Stan Brooks

# 64885/4/06Im torn between writing screenplays or novels. I've been attempting to succeed in screenplays since 1999 with no luck, but it's my passion. And I know, go what your heart follows and you'll succeed. But Hollywood, is all about who you know. So, lately, I've been thinking about writing novels so I can at least get my work out there, but I hear it's hard to published, too. I I need some advice. Stan Brooks

# 64725/2/06Does Hollywood buy short stories? And what are some of the films that were based from a short story. And, does publishers take short stories seriously as they do with novels? Stan Brooks

# 63933/25/06If you're trying to break in the business and you're a first-time screenwriter, will you have a better opportunity getting your screenplay either sold or made by independent companies or producers as oppose to trying to target the hollywood studio and agencies? And where can I find a complete list of independent companies and producers? Stan Brooks

# 63483/11/06I have written a sexual screenwriting .If you deal this kind of screenwriting please contact to me or introduce sites & agencies that deal sexual screenwriting or how I can sell my screenwriting. Thanks. Stan Brooks

# 62932/22/06I am screenwriter of Asian-American descent and I am currently writing a screenplay with an Asian-American lead. The only problem is that there is a lack of Asian-American actors, except for the stereotypical geek, gangster or martial arts master. This is a serious drama based on his nationality, therefore his race cannot be changed. I was wondering if this could hinder the chances of this screenplay getting created? Stan Brooks

# 62902/22/06Stan, I was lucky enough to pitch an idea that a producer was enthusiastic about. I then wrote the spec based on the pitch. I sent it, and now I've heard nothing back. "Does a lack of response mean he doesn't like my style of writing?" My thought is a work can be revised to fit a need. Or does this generally mean the work sucked? Stan Brooks

# 62792/21/06Can a short spec screenplay be taken as serious as a feature length one? And can you sell a short? Stan Brooks

# 62772/21/06Dear Stan, I am screenwriter of Asian-American descent and I have heard many times that if the story is good, the studios will be colorblind. That is all well and good, but my story is also based on an Asian-American character (it has to be because it is historically derived.) Because of the lack of Asian-American actors in Hollywood, do you think that my screenplay would have less of a shot of being made? Stan Brooks

# 62742/20/06Where can I find a buyer for my script that would get straight to the point of "yes its good i'll buy it" or "no, why waste my time"? Stan Brooks

# 62532/15/06As an aspring African-American screenwriter, I would love to know about the ratio of black screenwriters in Hollywood. Because as I attempt to research I found hardly any thats sold either specs or pitches, and when I read some of the screenwriting magazines, no articles or reference mention to any screenwriter of color or any ethic group. So, my question to you are there a lot of minority screenwriters in Hollywood today? Or a handful? Stan Brooks

# 62422/14/06If we are talking about long-term. Realistically, who would have a longer and profitable career. A screenwriter or a novelist? Stan Brooks

# 62242/7/06Is it okay to use a lot of "Voice Over" in a spec screenplay if it brings the best out of the script? Stan Brooks

# 62162/7/06Can you sell a short story in Hollywood? Is selling a short story the same as selling a novel or screenplay? Have there been films or television shows made by a short story or article? Stan Brooks

# 62062/3/06Hello Stan. While querying production companies, who's the best person to address your letter to? Development assistant, creative executive, producer, etc. Thanks. Stan Brooks

# 61992/1/06Where can I find a list of african-american agents, producers, directors, and a list of black screenwriters or organzations? And realistically, what are my chances as an african-american screenwriter able to sell a screenplay where this area is dominated by whites? Stan Brooks

# 61912/1/06I need some advise. I'm an aspiring African-American writer from Atlanta at a crossroads with my next story about writing it as a novel or a screenplay. I love both, but I can only do one. Would I have a better success writing it as a novel? Or screenplay. Now you might be saying is he writing for profit? But who don't, right? I don't know which way to go. Novel or Screenplay. Stan Brooks

# 61741/29/06So, what you guys are saying it's very possible you can sell your screenplay, get representation without being in Los Angeles and living home -- unless you have to? Stan Brooks

# 61631/27/06There is this agency company called... "The Screenplay Agency" (website www.screenplayagency.com) that likes my screenplay. But before I could have an agent shop my work around I would have to pay a $95.00 critique fee. Is this usual in the business? Or,I'm about to be set-up for a scam? Now, my work is registered. And I have not signed anything with them yet. Should I be worried? Stan Brooks

# 61511/27/06I hear a lot of talk about how your script should perfect, with no typos, no misspelling and grammar have to be on point. But when I read screenplay's whether it's a spec that's been sold, a contest winner or scripts that has been already made into a movie, i see all kinds of typos, bad grammar, and misspelling. Is there a double standard being played here? Stan Brooks

# 61431/26/06Would I have a greater success in selling my screenplay or even getting an agent being in Los Angeles by making contact and networking, instead of being all the way on the otherside of the country in Virginia where I can only simply send query letters? And would they take me a little bit seriously just by being out there? Stan Brooks

# 61181/14/06 Stan Brooks

# 607412/16/05What are some exercises that I can do to get my ideas comming fast in terms of writing comedy, creating characters, creating film and television premises ect. Thank you for your time. Stan Brooks

# 607212/16/05I recently spoke to an agent in NYC. He agreed to accept for a reading three of my treatments including the full scripts. Plus, two episodes of a popular tv drama I wrote. He indicated he first has a "reader" review it. It's been six weeks. I followed up with one phone call message and E-mail with no response. Should I just wait and not push it? Stan Brooks

# 606212/9/05Hello, Me and another author has been working on a screenplay, about the true story of Pablo Escobar, but we heard that the movie was already being made, but then canceled. So I was wondering do we finish the script or leave it alone? Because we would hate to write a screenplay that is already being made. Thank you for your time. Stan Brooks

# 604911/30/05Can you provide a name(s) and phone number(s) for a lawyer or lawyers who specialize in litigation re: getting the full or complete rights back to one's script and/or book property? Stan Brooks

# 603911/29/05I am writing my first spec script and would like to know where and how to contact agents once I'm done? will this contacting be free? Stan Brooks

# 603811/28/05Hello. Okay, producer contacts me and tells me he's found an interested buyer for my script. I get the feeling that the buyer will probably want to option the script, and pay me a fee if the movie gets made, but not hire me to write the script. Question: Would I be out of line if I asked for some sort of credit? Stan Brooks

# 603611/28/05Which country is the most advantageous to work with when co-producing a film? (other than South Africa) Stan Brooks

# 600811/19/05I co-wrote my ex-husband's autobiography. I am now writing a screenplay of this story. How do I option the rights to do the screenplay so I alone have the right to sell the story (my screenplay) to be made into a movie? Stan Brooks

# 600211/16/05Hi, I have identical twin little girls who are 1 1/2 years old. They are cuban mexican...very fair skin, light brown hair, hazel eyes and not because I am their mom but very pretty. So they are kind of in the middel not to light not to dark actually can look american, latino or european. How could I get them in the business if at all? Stan Brooks

# 599511/12/05I signed a deal with a low budget producer in which I'll get 10% of the profits after expenses. It is already filmed and has a distributor and will be in Blockbuster etc etc next year. My question is how much money could I end up seeing? My lawyer thinks a good chunk, but there's no ball park figure one way or another (high and low). Stan Brooks

# 599311/12/05About information on websites, particularly sites about conspiracies, secret societies, supernatural beings, etc. Is it legal to, without permission, use info. from those sites, like names of various secret societies, creatures and so on, in a speculation screenplay? Thanks a lot. Stan Brooks

# 595511/5/05I would like to know how to sell a screenplay that is an adaptation; a re-write of a very old movie that would require the location and purchase of the rights. Stan Brooks

# 595311/4/05Follow-up to #5947. Thanks a lot, Stan. What you said makes a lot of sense. I'll look into getting published first, then, if that doesn't pan out, I'll probably pitch the story as a supernatural thriller--that's what genre it's in anyway. I'm not, these days, a fan of the superhero genre. Even Hellboy or Constantine can't be exactly classified as heroes. Thanks again. Stan Brooks

# 594711/2/05This is a follow-up to #5943. The comic-book mini-series I'm referring to is one I've written and own, though not published. I wanted to know about the hot/cold status of the genre in Hollywood, because I see it as a feature, not a TV mini-series. Your answers helped a lot, though. Thank you. Stan Brooks

# 594311/1/05I'm wondering: is it possible to sale a spec script based on a comic-book mini-series I wrote? I mean, it's of the martial-arts-spy/supernatural genre. Is this a hot genre in Hollywood right now, or would it be a hard sale regardless of whether or not it's well-written? Stan Brooks

# 593110/25/05I am a film rights researcher for an L.A. producer-director. I want to track down the film rights to a book represented by ICM-NY. Does ICM-NY have a film rights unit or person? # 58308/1/05Hi, Is it unprofessional to describe a character's race? Most screenplays don't. (ex: Enemy o.t. State, Training Day). Or should you leave this entirely to the (casting) director. Thx. Stan Brooks

# 57857/22/05I've notice many screenwriters uses different formats, different ways of expressing their dialogue and grammar on scripts, and still get their spec script sold. Is it safe to say ... as long as your script has a great story and it's easy to read, it does not matter how it's formatted or your use of dialogue and grammar? Or...is it more about simply networking than anything? Stan Brooks

# 57266/14/05Hello Stan: In answer to your question, why would I need to know how to budget my script (#5723) -I post spec screenplays on Inktip.com. # 54562/12/05Hello Stan: I'm marketing a big budget SF script, more human drama than gadgets. Would a production company that has recently released an SF film bite? SF is a difficult genre to market. What would you do as a writer? People called me Hud in younger days. Thanks. Stan Brooks

# 54522/9/05Hello Stan: What is the journey of a spec feature script to DVD? What would such a script be worth? Less than a film sale? Any awards for DVD releases? Any advantages to going DVD? Thanks. Stan Brooks

# 54432/3/05Hi. We are a writer and writer/director in the UK who are looking to raise 200,000ukp to come to LA and shoot our first feature. Can you advise on the best way to raise the money? We have done rather well with our written work, shot several shorts and now want to direct our first feature. Kind Regards..... Stan Brooks

# 54372/1/05What type of editing software do professionals use to edit movies? Stan Brooks

# 54191/28/05Mr. Brooks. What would happen if I sent a script marked with "requested material" although it has not been requested? Would that give me a tiny bit more attention? Secondly, does all companies accept quaries? Thank you Lars Stan Brooks

# 54101/26/05Two questions: I have just completed a paid job for writing a feature script. I have also two scripts optioned at this time. I live in NYC and I was wondering who do you think are the best agents to contact? I have held off finding an agent until now, because I feel that my body of work was not complete. Now I am starting to look for representation. Any tips for submitting material? Stan Brooks

# 54011/24/05In response to Q #5398: I completely agree with you. I am planning to take a English Literature/Language degree, and was just making sure this was the right choice. I will have quite a bit of free time while I'm learning - how shall I be filling my time? I will be studying in London most likely - what ways can I get into the Film Industry over there (I wish to be a Director.) Stan Brooks

# 53981/22/05In response to question 5395, this is an undergraduate degree. Any ideas? Stan Brooks

# 53951/21/05Hi Stan. I'm about to embark on a degree. Which would you recommend, something that would help me get film-related work when completed. Thanks Stan Brooks

# 53881/20/05re:5383 I am getting the screenplays edited by the editor from the US who is helping me with the dialogue. I will be done with two more screenplays by April. I’m 100% sure I’ll score excellent in premise on those also. If they are just buying the premise then I’ll get the money on sale using which I want to direct a movie that takes place in India (another screenplay). (contd.) Stan Brooks

Is it true with producers who look at material at "submit literary material" section of the website also? I scored excellent in premise for 4 screenplays at coverage at www.hollywoodlitsales.com. I am from India; English being my second language handicapped me. (Contd.) Stan Brooks

# 53801/18/05I have the rights to produce the movie to this great book, but I'm a newbie, I don't know how get through door. I need to pitch to executives, investors, other producers. But, the gatekeepers are tough, they think I'm a writer and refer me to an automated machine. As a producer what should I say to the gatekeeper to get an appointment to pitch? Is there a right insider lingo? Thank you. Stan Brooks

# 53401/5/05Stan, I really need to find a good publicist for a number of reasons, most of all a documentary/publicity stunt I'm doing. Where can I find a list of decent ones?I know you only used a pub. one time, but I thought you might have some good advice about how to find and things to be aware of. Keep up the great work, you were the biggest help of anyone when I was starting my career. Kevin Stan Brooks

# 532612/31/04I have a vision and a basic outline of how to remake an early sci-fi movie. How do I contact Dean Devlin or Roland Emmerich (or others) with my ideas and this preliminary screen play? Stan Brooks

# 532412/30/04It seems like a lot of people are asking about how to get a list of prod. companies and agents. The best way to get a comprehensive list is get the Hollywood Creative Directory books. www.hcdonline.comThe next step is to call up development execs at the companies and be persistent to try to get a meeting.Once you get your first meeting, start telling the other companies who you've met with when calling the other execs. # 530412/17/04Hi, Stan! In relation to question #5290. I have always envisioned it as a puppet and live action film. I guess in the Henson arena. I am bit experienced as an animator, though. I've worked in commercials since the mid 1980's. Thanks for the advice, Kem Stan Brooks

# 530112/16/04Mr. Brooks, I'm in the final stage of obtaining the life rights for a terrific story. The optionee is requesting royalty terms. The project would be a feature with an estimated 15-20 mil budget. What is a good blanket figure to put in the agreement that wouldn't scare off a studio at a later date? Thanks for your time. Stan Brooks

# 529012/9/04I have a TV script that is a Christmas special. I am a writer, an acomplished artist and musician, so it's natural that this teleplay is a musical. Everyone (not just family) who has heard the songs loves them. The story is, after many rewrites, I believe, very marketable. Should I create an animatic of the whole film with storyboards or just send the script? The real question; Who do I send this to? Stan Brooks

# 528612/7/04Hi, Mr. Brooks. I am wondering how to get permission to show a copyrighted movie. There will be no money collected to view the film, it is solely for educational purposes. This is to show your film "Searching for Allison Porchnik" to students at Brandeis University for a new initiative aimed to increase Brandeis spirit through history. I'm happy to send a detailed letter to you if you'd like! Stan Brooks

# 528512/7/04I'm writing and producing a TV pilot. It's an urban drama. We shot a trailer to it, but I have an investor willing to put up a substantial budget. Is it wise to shoot a pilot without a network backing it? Stan Brooks

# 527512/1/04Query Letter question: Besides adding the logline, genre, etc. I mention the page count of my story just to let them know I've written it within the expectations of that genre. A non-pro told me by including the page count an agent/producer will take the writer as a rube. Do you feel this is true if you see it in a query? Stan Brooks

# 525911/25/04Mr.Brooks. You wrote in an earlier answer that your company do not accept unsolicited scripts very often. As a producer with connections, which company or producer would you recomment me sending to. I will try sending to you as well. Be ready. Thanks for your time, Lars Stan Brooks

# 524711/17/04I am in the process of obtaining the option rights to a life story I feel has serious market potential. The optionee is asking for a payment of two hundred thousand if I exercise the option. I feel this price is too high. I am correct? What is the recommended exercise price for a life story? Thank you. Stan Brooks

# 521710/29/04Sir, as a producer when you read a query letter & the logline in it, what exactly do you look for that would make you want to ask for the script? Gururaj Stan Brooks

# 521010/25/04#1) I have 85+ Reality TV show ideas -WGA registering adds up. Could I just use an attorney or Notary Public? #2) Do you recommend any directories or search engine terms to find production companies? I don't want a half-bit guy living w/mom who is listed in WGA to get my work. #3) Any reputable websites that forward/list your reality tv show ideas that are for real + don't charge $35-$50 a whack? Stan Brooks

# 519810/20/04Dear Mr. Brooks, I have two movie scenarios which I would like to represent. I believe one will be a very good romatic picture and one will be a successful horror movie. I will be delighted if you could help me finding the way that I could represent these two scenarios in order to sell. Thank you in advance for your kind attention. Kind Regards, Ramin Stan Brooks

# 515110/5/04How long should you wait before following up on a query letter that you'd sent to an agent or manager? And if a month has gone by and they have not responded to your query, doesn't it mean that they weren't interested, or have not got around to it? Stan Brooks

# 514210/2/04When you say, "Try and find someone on your continent who might have a connection to a US/Canadian agent or manager." What do you mean by connection? Do you mean if I find such person, he can arrange my deals, through that US/CAN agent he's connected with, with Hollywood production companies/studios/buyers without my visiting LA?Sorry to keep bothering you on it, but you indeed have understood the sole of my problem-Thanks Stan Brooks

# 514110/1/04Thanks Stan. I know this is a tough question, but in regards to the deal I'm trying ot work with my friend we're trying to get an idea of industry standard for something like this. Please don't break my heart and tell us there's no standard. Your guess as to what is reasonable is much better than ours. Stan Brooks

# 513610/1/04I just moved to Los Angeles a couple of weeks ago, but I'm living in hotels at the present. So how can I query an agent or manager without a physical address for them to respond to. Can I provide them my cellphone number as a SASE? Stan Brooks

# 51249/29/04Hi! Do you think it's wise to write a spec script that will offend some sterotypical roles in Hollywood, and the powers that be, even though you feel so passionate about this story. Will an agent or manager be eager to accept that screenplay? Stan Brooks

# 51169/29/04I have the 26th edition of the Hollywood Creative Directory. Can I still use that version to make contacts? Or does Hollywood changes so often that i need to pick up the 27th edition? I would like to know. Stan Brooks

# 51129/29/04Unfortunately, AFA I know no such agencies in India. Can I find some LA or NY agent from India for a script of mine that he can find the prod.com for and I authorize him to do the script deal with prod.com on my behalf? Just for the script and not finding works for me initially, unless I come there after my first script sale, what do you think, can it happen? Thanks-a-lot in advance! Stan Brooks

# 51099/28/04Can I, from India, find an agent through internet? If I get successful, can I authorize him to do the deals with prod. comp. on my behalf? I truly can't afford to visit LA, what should I say to Hollywood people when they will ask me to come there? I've heard it in books and on websites that never tell Hollywood that you are out of money and can't afford this & that, is-it true? Stan Brooks

# 50429/13/04Is this Screenwriting Expo 3 worth traveling 2500 miles for? Because I have been told by a cretain producer that it's nothing more than like a job fair. Or will it be better just to mail out some brilliant queries and get notice that way? I have already paid for my reserve, but I want some clarity on this matter so I can avoid wasting any more of my money. Thank you. Stan Brooks

# 50299/7/04Sir, I have written, directed, acted, edited in 3 short films. I want to do feature films. I want to do independent films (issue based), I want to know how to raise finance, & distribution of such films like mysterious skin by Gregg Araki http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/thr/columns/film_reporter_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1000624044 I wouldnt say I dont need money at all. # 50249/5/04Hi Stan I'm new to this (the site and writing). You see i am trying to write a reality show (no scripts...).I'm writing an outline for the show. # 49638/21/04Hello! I have been querying agents, manangers, production companies for almost a year now with my several screenplays that i have written, and with everyone i have been rejected or no reponse back. # 49568/20/04Dear Stan, Having written two spec scripts for hour-long dramas, I’d some guidance on industry benchmarks: 1. Does a single writer write a whole script, or are lines divided among staff? 2. How long does the average writer need to write the average hourlong drama first draft? 3. How much time do staff writers spend rewriting as opposed to writing? Also, what is the TV calendar cycle—from hiring to writing to vacactions? Thanks. Stan Brooks

# 49418/18/04If you have no connections. Is it easier to break in the industry as an actor, than it is being a screenwriter? I was told by someone that it'll be much easier to sell your screenplays if you are a working actor, because you'll have some sort of connection with someone in hollywood, than a person off the street just trying to sell a screenplay, is this true? Stan Brooks

# 49328/18/04What is a story analysis? I was told by a certain producer/manager that a story analysis will take a look at my script and to see if it's marketable for $150.00. Should i be concerned? Stan Brooks

# 48838/1/04Good morning, On selling a produced one hour special to TV. Hypothetically....Jack Black produces a special for Cable TV on an "Average" Budget. What's is a ballpark selling price? Explain your experience or important factors. What would be an average budget in your view for tv 2004? Stan Brooks

# 48767/29/04In all honesty. Does your screenplay has to be formatted to the industry standards in order for an agent or studio exec accepts or buys it? Stan Brooks

# 48667/29/04Do it absolutley matter in Hollywood if the structure of the script is not "The Standard", but as long as the agent or studio executive can read it clearly, understand it, but more importantly, have a great story/plot, does it really matter about the "The Standard"? Stan Brooks

# 48577/29/04Why are there so many screenplay consultants charging ridiculous prices, without a guarantee that you will sell your script. I can take that money and fly to Los Angeles on a round-trip for those prices! Are they scams? Stan Brooks

# 48427/27/04Is it true that some spec screenplays that are sold are not well written at all? Stan Brooks

# 48317/25/04Why are there so many spec scripts or pitches being sold with such ridiculous log lines, but when you query your story idea to an agent or production company that you know your script is absolutely better, they in turn tells you that they are not interested. Is this what they call the Hollywood catch 22 that they talk about? Stan Brooks

# 48227/25/04Can you sell or get an agent by writing a treatment than the script itself being a first time writer, even though you have plenty of other spec scripts that shows that you know your craft? Stan Brooks

# 48127/24/04Why is it so hard for aspiring African-American or any minority screenwriters to get many of their scripts sold? And why are there a shortage of spec urban dramas being sold and told by minorities? If I am wrong, please with all honesty, correct me please? Stan Brooks

How can I work this to my advantage ??? I have read that agents are more willing to view a completed project. I've played it for several groups and they are REALLY laughing. How can I find a agent who focuses on TV ? Stan Brooks

# 47787/22/04Hey Stanley! I haven't asked a question since Nov.9th! I produced an hour long comedy show and i am in post-production..I'm making a 12 minute demo reel to pitch for a potential TV special.I have 5 actors besides myself appearing...do I need to get them to sign release forms before I pitch it or only if I am offered a broadcast? # 434512/29/03I'm doing a project with an established reality prod.company.An exec at a bigger reality company wants to"buy into the project as an executive.(I guess meaning producer).I've never heard of this, butthere's a lot I haven't heard of.2.If an agent reps some of your projects as a producer, but hasn't signed you,are you free to take seperate project to otheragents?Effectivly you can get more projects out there and it's better than being signed by one I would think Stan Brooks

# 433312/25/03Is agood way to break in to buy into a prod. company'sproject as an exec?An exec.at big prod. companywants to buy into one of mine but Ididn't know if it can work the other way.2.How many agents can you work with?I have one agentthat reps most of my projectsbut I'm not signed with. Can I work with otehr agencys aswell? If so,Isn't this preferable to being repped?3.Will agents set you up with meetings with prod. companysthey don'trep? Stan Brooks

# 433212/25/03Stan the man, happy hollidays. 1. TV movie: I have a life story I want to do about someone who recently died? Talk to the family to get the rights? And is it better to go in directly or partner with a prod. company?I know a lot of these cable outlets do in house(ESPN,VH1,MTV), so they might be more open to buying it and doing it themselves? Stan Brooks

# 430212/5/03So many questions, so little space. Negotiating rights to a book...any suggestions on guidelines on rights purchase price? Already agreed on options price. Proposing 2.5% of approved budget ceiling 500k/floor 250k. Also have 3 other projects 2 tv-1 feature....should I only focus on either tv or films? Too many ideas, not enough money! Have own production co. (in name and taxes)Want to work in coordination with bigger companies! Suggestions? Stan Brooks

# 426611/22/03Stan, you truely are the best. Thank you so much for the thorough and thoughtfull answer. It is SO, SO, difficult to get good advice in this town especially since half the people won't help you and hope you fail and the other half think you're an idiot for asking and not already knowing. Again, thanks a lot. Stan Brooks

# 426511/21/03Thanks Stan,so if I'm being offered an option from the prod company of 2% with no money that's kind of crappy and I should probably onlytake it if their's no other options right?I'm planning on turning this deal down, but they keep telling me on reality shows 2%of the budget with a 2000 floor is above standard.I'm asssuming this is a ploy on their part.Ihave no credits, but 30 companies I can take it to. Stan Brooks

# 426311/20/03Hey Stan, just wanted to see what you thought -- someone told me 5% of the budget is right for a reality show. Stan Brooks

# 425911/19/03Sorry about accidentally sending my question 3 times. My attorney says it's my decision. Are the numbers I outlined in line with what most people are getting on these deals?I just don't want to get screwed and find out 3 months later that typically an option deal on something like this is like 5 or 10% and I should shop it more.If what I outlined is a pretty middle of the road deal however,I'll take it Stan Brooks

# 425011/14/03Stan, I'm a feature writer looking to transition into a full-time development executive job. I was offered a CE position a year ago by a an A-List director but they ended up hiring me to pen a feature that is in development hell. I also have experience as a indie producer having produced a micro-budget feature. How do suggest I go about this? Stan Brooks

# 424611/12/03I've got a decent piece of talent attached to a reality show treatment I created.A prod.conmpany wants to option it.2000 floor, 2% net, producer credit,no services,1year free option,no option money.Does that sound right or is it low?I know there's no industry "standard deal",and I have an attorneynegotiating, but for my own peace of mind I'dlike to have some concept of what these deals look like and I have no otehr way of finding out. # 422111/10/03Is it easier to go to a production company to sell, or even have them take a look at your script, rather having to go and trying to land an agent? Stan Brooks

# 421911/9/03Stan, Are you back? It seems like you were gone for a while earlier in the year Alot of questions must have piled up...but it seems like you looked at them.Am I imagining this?because last time I checked you were several months behind on any answers.Did you go to Figi ?? This is great news, you give out fabulous advice. You have helped many people and that is too cool..Thank You Stan. Stan Brooks

# 420311/6/03I look at the daily spec sales daily. i love the website. but mostly i've seen pitches and spec scripts that hardly makes any sense sold. But, they have succeeded, and that's most important. My question is... If you're in the Los Angeles area, and there's tons of agents all over, what is the best way to approach an agent? Stan Brooks

# 419411/6/03I've been told by several people down here in Los Angeles that it's possible to pitch your idea to an agent and get it sold without ever writing the script. Is this true? Stan Brooks

# 418511/6/03I know its possible to succeed in both as an actor, and as a screenwriter. But realistically, which of the two you have a greater chance in succeeding in? Stan Brooks

# 409610/14/03Stan, thanks for the advice. I think I may have incorrectly phrased my question b/c I read your post on agents. My question is if you want an agent to represent a one time project, (or if your agent decides not to rep. a project of yours) can you bring the project to someone in the same agency or in the NY office? Stan Brooks

# 409510/13/03I have a hideous relationship with the agent the head of a large agency "assigned/suggested" I work with. He's wrongly accused me of falsifying project commitments and blown me off. This is a big agency and I need rep and this is just hip-pocket with a new agent. What should I do?Bring the projects to the head?Mentiont he problem? I can't salvage witht he current.Oh boy. Stan Brooks

# 409410/13/03Stan, it is truely a pleasure to have you back. I don't say that lightly either> You've saved me countless hours and money in a business where no one wants to help anyone. You are genuinly a saint for doing this. My question: If one agent passes on a project can you go to another agent at the same agency? Stan Brooks

# 40469/24/03 What does the term packaging mean?I have a concept for a sitcom and a good supporting actor on board. We need a "name".Is it more attractive to go to the "names" agent or manager and ask him to package it(bring in a showrunner, etc?)or put the elements needed together myself to get a good look and then approach the name actor. Also, the supporting actor has a good in with the guy through a friend. What souds best? Stan Brooks

# 39218/11/03Honestly, how often does someone who wrote the screenplay get to direct it? I have lived this screenplay I wrote for the past three years and I have gone over ever scene in my head a thousand times. If I sell the screenplay will I have any directing say? I know that Stephen King goes to the set of his movies and at least gives ideas. How likely could that happen. Thanks in advance. Stan Brooks

# 39208/11/03I just finished writing a horror film and I was wondering what the recommended length should be. I mean, most of the film is suspenseful and therefor there is a lack of space. Is it standard procedure for producers to request a screenplay without first having the writer sign a release form? Stan Brooks

# 38838/4/03I have a question about dialogue. One of my characters is a chatterbox and there are often times when what she is actually saying is unimportant, it's just background noise and the real focus of the scene is elsewhere. # 36156/6/03I have a "hip pocket" agreement with an agent at a big agency. Essentially all that's happened is he gets to hear all of my ideas in the event one really catches his eye -- even though all of them are very viable projects. And it doesn't help that I'm only 16. I don't have a mentor and nobody in this business seems to care. It's not that my scripts aren't good enough because people have read them and given me constructive criticism. Isn't there some creative way to get somebody's attention? Thanks. Stan Brooks

# 35846/2/03Does it make sense for a new produer to have a manager for advice and to help look for jobs? 2. Someone I respect mentioned I should look for a job as a creative producer with a prod. company. I have no credits but a bunch of strong projects. Is this a reasonable/good thing to look for, and what IS a creative executive? Also, WHERE can I find such job openings? Call prod. companys? Stan Brooks

# 34555/8/03Stan, you are the best. Thank you so much for your help. I've withdrawn the pitch from the network and will tell the production company about the withdrawl once the deal is made. Thanks again -- in a business where information is nearly impossible to come by, your genorosity is much appreciated. Stan Brooks

# 34545/8/03Stan, I think you're right. Thanks so much for the advice. If I pull it back from the netrwork should I tell the prod. company I pulled it back, or just say I pitched it? Stan Brooks

# 34535/8/03Stan, thanks for the advice. In reference to my previous question, what if I alreay goofed and told the prod. company I haven't pitched it anywhere. This was advice I was given by someone in the business, but from what your saying it sounds like I goofed. Stan Brooks

# 34415/6/03First thanks for all your advice Stan, it's of much help from a respected producer. My question, what does it mean when someone gets money AGAINST the gross profits of a movie? I've seen it a couple times and wondered what it means. Thanks again. Stan Brooks

# 34345/5/03Dear Stan, I've heard some conflicting information about displaying your WGA number and/or copyright information on a script; that in effect it's a sign of an amateur to do so. What is your opinion on this, and where on the script should this information be shown, if at all? Thank-you. Stan Brooks

# 34185/3/03Stan: I recently posted a screenplay on writersscriptnetwork.com, and although it's only been 2 days, out of the 8 co.'s that've viewed the logline, NONE has viewed the synopsis, let alone the script. It's a high-concept idea, so I would think people would be curious to read at least the synopsis. Now I'm concerned about people using the site to get ideas, then pass them to friends.THANKS! Stan Brooks

# 34004/29/03When a flick's budget is say 60million. Does that usually include what is paid to the stars in it? Stan Brooks

# 33744/25/03Hi Stan - It seems as if "release forms" are to protect producers by saying "we'll look at your script, but we may already be developing a similiar project" Would a prod company ever sign a release form that a writer sends that acknowledges that? It just seems that SOME of the clauses in those contracts are not good for a writer. Thanks. Stan Brooks

# 33674/24/03Stan, Follow-up on recent audio questions. If I can get the "voice " on the live set instead of dubbing would that be OK ? It would save $ . Stan ,I can't tell you how many times your advice has made me look more knowledgable than I was, especially when there are people from NBC etc. in the room.I see the light at the end of the tunnel on this show now. Many Thanks (I have space this time to say so.) Stan Brooks

# 33454/22/03Dear Stan, Follow-up to Q # 3298. The audio will probably have overlaps in places because we are also going to have a "canned"audience track throughout. The animal voice overdub, the live show set audio talking,cd for a musical guest that lip sing it. I think I'm gonna need 3 or so tracks. What audio format or system will I need. What is ADR? Do I need timestamping for this? Can you un-complicate this?Thank You Stan Brooks

# 33424/22/03Hi Stan, Nice column. Last year I optioned a script to a British producer. Now I have two scripts finished so I plan to ask the producer to recommend me to an agent. What do you think about this as an producer? Is this too much to ask? Would he own a favor to the agent for recommending me? Should I expect him to read the script[s] before sending them to an agent? Thanks. Stan Brooks

# 33384/22/03 Respected Sir, I have finished one screenplay and registered it with WriteSafe.com.Is it enough? I am living in India and can't move to USA. I am confident about my subject, so please tell me what should I do to sell my screenplay. Thank you. Your faithfuly Biswajit Stan Brooks

# 33174/18/03Stan, I'm awaiting responses from three (3) separate Hollywood producers who are reviewing my published book. Since I have no agent and am managing things myself, should I not let all three know of each other? How long should I expect to wait? Stan Brooks

# 33154/18/03Hey Stan. I'm writing my first screenplay, and I'm wondering how long it should be? I see movies dragged out to 3 hours unneccesarily. Wouldn't it be better to pack it all into an hour and a half? What's the best sort of time? Thanks Stan Brooks

# 33144/18/03I have an idea for a game show, and after I register the treatment with the WGA, what is my next step for shopping it? More specifically, should I go to an agent or production company? I do not have representation at this time although I have been receiving requests for one of my movie screenplays. Thank you for your time! Stan Brooks

# 33094/17/03I've seen WritersScriptNetwork.com mentioned a few times in these Q&A's and it sounds like a great opportunity for a new writer. However, I'm wondering -- would it be easier for someone to steal a story from a script posted on a site like that, rather than from a script sent out to buyers from an agent or attorney? Thankyou! Stan Brooks

# 33064/17/03A prominent Hollywood Agency is interested in reading my script, but suggested they could only do so if it was submitted through an entertainment Lawyer or Manager. Why do I have to pay a Lawyer to do this? Would it not be the same if I signed and attached a standard release form with my script? Stan Brooks

# 32984/16/03Dear Stan, I have a scene which involves an interview with an animal that "talks".There are 3 people in the scene too. What is the way the voice of the animal is usually done? Overdubed in the studio after filming or live off-camera on the set? Tell us what you know about this process and pitfalls to watch out for. This is an Independent Production trying this for the first time.Thank You Stan Brooks

# 32694/10/03Stan - I have a feature project for which I've written a treatment and there are particular companies that might be right for the project. What's the best way to sell a pitch idea to someone? I have completed specs so they can see my writing, but what's the best way to approach them for the treatment? Stan Brooks

# 32624/9/03Stan: I wrote earlier to thank you for responding to my original question #3243, but I ran out of room before I could ask you: How do you feel about pitch seminars where writers pitch their story ideas? Are there any legitimate ones that you can suggest? Thanks again !! Stan Brooks

# 32594/9/03Stan: thanks so much for your response to my question #3243. I had a feeling this "Producer's Rep" was deceitful. And truthfully, I didn't have $100 to give -- let alone $10k! Worst part about it is, I "won" "best pitch" at this person's seminar, thinking it could be my big break, and all I got was solicited for money. Thankyou for letting me vent, I really needed to !! Stan Brooks

# 32434/8/03Someone calling himself a "Producer's Rep" says he loves a screenplay of mine, and told me that for a $10k retainer, he would pitch my film idea to companies to pre-sale it and raise money to produce it as an indie. Ever heard of a writer paying someone to do this? Also, he said indie production companies never purchase screenplays -- is that true? Stan Brooks

# 32364/7/03My writing partner and I have finished our script. We have sent out several query letters and are awaiting signs of life on the other side. There are 2 film festivals nearby, and we are wondering if there is a way to go about pitching or giving someone a query letter/script at these festivals? We feel strange and intrusive just going up to someone there and jumping right into their faces. Is this worthwhile? Stan Brooks

# 32174/2/03Dear Mr. Brooks, My DP has a Canon XL1s camera which takes the Mini DV cartridge but I've been told to use Beta. Is beta going to be that much better? Do they make a digital beta cartridge for this camera or would you run it from the camera to a beta recorder?I'm confused. This is for a TV spec pilot and I want it to be TV quality as much as possible. Please ..your opinions on this. You are da man,Stan! Thanks Stan Brooks

# 32144/2/03A very respectable production company responded to my query letter and follow up email that they'd be happy to read my screenplay if I submit it with a release form. Is there somewhere I can get a release form? Thanks for your help. Stan Brooks

# 32033/30/03I've heard conflicting responses when asking about selling a script. What goes on first. ie: what happens first. They are interested, who pays for the flight, hotel etc. If I don't have an agent will they recommend one? Thanks. Stan Brooks

# 32003/29/03Hi Stan, Great answer to Q.#3011 but what is a scratch track? is it audio, visual or both? Please define scratch track in ref. to filming music videos. Thank You ..I read all your questions and answers. Stan Brooks

# 31963/28/03Dear Stan, when sending your screenplay to a literary agency do you need to include some sort of cover letter to go with it, like explaining your screenplay or anything of that sort? If so, what things should I be sure to add? Thanks. Stan Brooks

# 31883/26/03Dear Mr Brooks, About four months ago, I received an email from a producer saying he was interested in one of my feature scripts. I don't know whether he has read the script, or just a log line. His list of credits would seemingly indicate he is the perfect partner for my script. I've written him twice with no response. Can you think of a way I might get his attention again? Stan Brooks

# 31713/21/03how do you go about pitching an idea for a t.v. show to a network Stan Brooks

# 31683/21/03How often do you physically go in to pitch? If I'm pitching to a prod. company can I do it over the phone? What about a network? They say to run any ideas I have by them but I don't know if that means I have to call them up and talk about it or set up a meeting.I'd prefer to just do it over the phone and save the time. Stan Brooks

# 31543/18/03Hello,l just finish a story is all about advanture, l am looing for an organization to buy my story, please l am looking forward to you for assistance. Stan Brooks

# 31483/17/03If you pitch to a network and they pass can you go back later with a prod. company ont he same project? If you can pitch to a network directly, does it make sense to even pitch to prod. companies? Thanks Stan. Stan Brooks

# 31473/16/03Hey Stan. I'm currently out in New York and I am deeply floundering. My problem is that I'm trying to get my sketch comedy group, that I have run with my writing partner for over five years with, to get us to the next level so to speak. We need to know what manager/agent we should contact and how to go about doing it. Our humor is kind of like HBO's Mr. Show. Thanks in advance. Stan Brooks

# 31343/11/03Stan, I know you said to only pitch 1 or 2 ideas. What if they don't like either? Just say "Okay, that's all I got" and leave? Stan Brooks

# 31333/11/03Stan, someone brought a fascinating true story to me. The guy whose life it's about is dead. 1. What is the nature of the deal I make with the person who brought me the story? 2. # 31273/9/03Dear Stan, I have been inquiring to literary agents for the past few months and just a couple of days ago one agency asked me to send in my whole screenplay after they had received one of my query letters. They know I'm 15 and I'm very excited about this. Do you have any comments or tips or anything I should be aware of? Thanks. Stan Brooks

# 31193/6/03I have a meeting with a network on tues.I've had a bunch of meetings with prod. companies where they said they like certain pitches/projects 1.Should I call these prodcomp. all at once or one at a time and see if they want to go in and pitch with me?Should I tellperson at the network I meet with that these compan. are interested in working with me?3.How many ideas should I pitch?Anything else I should know? # 31043/3/03 I have experience writing and directing commercials for a production company as well as writing my own film scripts. I want to open my own company that accepts scripts for analysis. Is this possible with just a background in commercials and with none of my film scripts having been picked up as of yet? Would I have to know an agent or someone who gets scripts to production companies? Stan Brooks

# 30983/3/03I am impressed with your knowledge of our Canadian talent agents and agencies. Anyhow, I pose the following question: If I submit a script either to your site or to a U.S. production company, do I need to register my script with the WGA or can I register it through the WGC (Canadian version of WGA)for consideration by a U.S. company? Also, would I need a Canadian agent to represent me? Thanks so much, martha Stan Brooks

# 30752/27/03Paramount Pictures bought a pitch "very" similar to my screenplay. How do I go about getting another studio or developement executive to look at my script or at least my logline or synopsis. I know studios are often in a neck-and-neck competition trying to out do the other by making similar films at the same time. Any advice you can offer is greatly appreciated. Thank you for you time, Jeffrey Dainton Stan Brooks

# 30712/27/03I am on a production team with an A-list producer/writer. I bogarted my way here through a series of lucky breaks. We are developing a few high budget features now. How much should I expect to get paid? When does the producer get paid? set up? What are the range of fees? I am scared to to bring it up because they are millionaires, and I am not. Stan Brooks

Can he get my writing covered? Dave Stan Brooks

# 30342/18/03Stan, thanks so much, you are teh best. I think I've been phrasing my queston wrong all along. What I'm wondering is if the PRODUCTION COMPANY will take teh idea if they have to split it with me and someone else. I've been told otherwise by a company before they heard the idea. Also, is the idea aquired by me (as producer him as creator) with an option the same way a script is? Stan Brooks

# 30282/16/03I met with a prod. company that said they love my reality show pitch and want me to come in soon to pitch to the head of the company. They told me it's in my best interests not to tell anyone the idea b/c it's high concept and might get stolen easily. I have meetings set up all this week. What should I do? Pitch something else? Push the meeting back? Stan Brooks

# 30222/14/03Stan, I was wondering if you could answer my question about aquiring ideas for reality shows. Does it make sense if you're new and still have to pair with a production company? How is the agreement done? And my friend has a script that is a great idea but poorly executed. How do I handle this? Stan Brooks

# 30172/13/03Dear Mr. Brooks, I'm 13 and have currently completed 13 pages of my screenplay, titled The Clandestine Girl. I've always wanted to be famous, and many say I have a talent with writing. # 30062/12/03Mr. Brooks, I also have a treatment for a reality TV show and was wondering how I could go about pitching it. The idea of the show can easily be recognized since it is in the title of the show. If I was to send query letters, should I include the title of the show or just say that I have a good idea for a show? Thank you for your time. Stan Brooks

# 30032/11/03Stan, I have created an idea for a reality Television Show and have gotten good reviews from Well known people in the industry. It's an on the road type show. Thanks for your help! Jay Stan Brooks

Should you mention other people are interested in your projects? If so, when? Stan Brooks

# 29762/1/03I plan to produce my screenplay. I have an ICM actress in mind. She is not incredibly famous, but she has been in two major films and tv shows. # 29441/27/03Dear Stan, I got back a strange response from an agency in New York that I sent a query letter to. They said that since I didn't live in California, they couldn't represent me, because LA is where all of the motion picture and television material is bought. I just wanted to know what you thought about that. Thanks. Stan Brooks

Stan Brooks

# 29141/21/03Dear Stan, Do you know the agent address to Susannah Grant? Thanks. Regards, Sunkanmi Stan Brooks

# 28801/8/03As a first time producer I am gonna do a short shot at a Coffee Shop location. I wanted and found a corner booth with a retro look. There's no dialog because it is for a music segment lip-singing so we don't even need "Quite on the set"..We'll be there about an hour and we'll not disrupt the buisness. # 12857/13/01Dear Stan-- I'm writing a new spec script and I find that I can't pull it off without a little help from an expert advisor in Marine Biology. I was about to contact someone at a nearby university field lab when I realized I have nothing to offer them. I don't need mountains of time from them (a few phone calls and a couple of visits should do it), but I would like to offer them something for their time and effort. Being that it's a spec script, I don't know if I will be able to sell it or not, and I will make that very clear to the person(s) I contact. However, I can't afford to pay them out of my pocket, so I was thinking about offering them a small percentage from the sale of the script (if it sells). Any advice for me? Any guidelines and/or experience in this area? Thanks and regards, Dan Worley Stan Brooks

# 12627/6/01Hi, could you please tell me whether you have heard any good things about Brooklyn Weaver's "Energy Entertainment" and Marc Hernandez @ Zide/Perry? I wanted to know a little more before signing their release forms and submitting my work. Thanks. Stan Brooks

# 12567/5/01Hi Stan: First off--at the risk of sounding sycophantic--"Rain Man" is easily on my list of favorite films. That's saying something, as I watch over 300 movies a year and have extremely good taste (smile). Thanks for being the catalyst behind bringing that story to the screen. Okay, I've been wanting to ask this question to someone "in the biz" for a long, long time. Here goes... How in the world do movies like "The Animal" and "Hey, Dude Where's My Car" ever get production approval? Oh, man, those movies suck! Do they ever shut a production down after it starts because they know it's smelling and there's no way to save it? You know, turn off the lights and camera and say, "Well, folks, this isn't working. It has no value whatsoever, so lets save time and money by packing it up and not going any further with this piece of crap." Does that ever happen? Thank you, Daniel Worley Stan Brooks

# 12026/17/01I have a television series idea and i need to write a killer logline for it, one or two sentences long. Any tips on writing in? Thank you Raffi Lalazarian Stan Brooks

# 11686/6/01There are many, many answers on this web site that clearly demonstrate that once a first-time writers sells his script, it will be re-written many times and totally taken over by someone else. In that case, who wins the Oscar? Stan Brooks

# 11335/25/01I was wondering if one does a re-write for a prod co under a non-option agreement, can they claim co-authorship? What constitutes a co-credit in this case, ~ a few pages/scenes? How can one protect themselvess to retain their sole authorship if this is the case? Stan Brooks

# 11055/19/01hello my man, Stan! How's its going? Look, I would like to know. Can you write a three hour spec screenplay and be successful selling it? Stan Brooks

# 10895/8/01Have you ever recieved a script that you liked but felt it was better suited for a motion picture? If so, do telvision and film companies work together? Plus I'm curious to know if your production company has a website and what is your policy on submissions? Stan Brooks

# 10865/8/01Hi Stan, how do i go about securing option or rights on books before they are published, or even books that are already published? How much is an average cost of an option? Thanks for your time. Stan Brooks

# 10845/6/01Stan: Your insight is a "life-saver." If a producer wants to option or buy the rights to my script, should I let them know what it was previously optioned for? My agent negotiated my first option, but I'm no longer represented. Example: If a producer offers an amount of $75,000, should I then tell him it was optioned for almost $500k? (that was the amount of my first option) THANKS!!! Stan Brooks

# 10705/2/01Yes, I'm definitely an Elvis Costello fan. Thanks for your suggestions. I actually have two OTHER feature scripts set in Mexico (besides my as-likely-to -be-catapulted-onto-the- netowrks-airwaves-as- pink-elephant-onto-the white-sands-of-Whitehorse aforementioned series). One is an eco/adventure, the other's a bedroom farce. Both relatively low buget. Are there any companies you can think of with a penchance for shooting south of the Rio Grande I shou8ld contact. Stan Brooks

# 10665/1/01Hola, Thanks for the reality TV advice (which I've passed on to my agent). Another quandry: I've written a bible and back-door pilot/feature for a quirky Northern Exposure-ish global village series about an ex-pat community, which I was hoping to launch as a Canadian/Mexican official co-production. Unfortunately, none of the Canadian companies approached can see the "canadian content" in my southern locale. Who should I approach in the states? thanks Stan Brooks

# 10584/28/01Hi! you seem like the only one with the excellent answers! Can you sell a one, or half hour spec television show? because I have one and I would like to know can I sell or Im just wasting my time trying to sell it. I'll like to know. Stan Brooks

# 10574/27/01Hi, I came up with a compelling concept for a reality based show. My Montreal agent took the one pager to an established Quebec producer who seems eager to option. I, however, want to check out potential USA network interest before settling for a smaller pond sale. As such what's a ball park selling price for these shows in the US? And who we should be pitching to? Thanks a million. Stan Brooks

# 10234/17/01Can you suggest a place to go to get feedback on my leavebehind for a new TV series idea? (somewhere that is reliable and not expensive) Thanks Angela Stan Brooks

# 10194/16/01What are the chances of getting a production company to develop your project if you can get talent attached? With so many actors having production companies now, it would seem like it would be easier to get a script to them. I've had some success with it, but wanted to know your thoughts. Thanks very much! Stan Brooks

# 10174/16/01A Chicago Publication Called Performink printed a story to the effect of Chicago Improvisers will be getting a lot of work during the writers strike b/c improv doesn't req. writers. I am an improviser in Chicago and want to know how this would affect the strike and the writers, being that if would be an actor thing, yet seeming to hurt the writers. Thanks Angela Stan Brooks

# 9323/14/01Mr. Brooks: I have read that political thrillers are not interesting to Hollywood, e.g. big gov always wins over small hero; too complicated; a shadow world; always end badly, etc., etc. Is there still a place, and why? Thanks, Charles Stan Brooks

# 9133/8/01Howdy, I just recieved a reply to a submission to a Producer. He said my dialogue and action weren't to par and told me that he will pass on it. At the end he said that if I'm tired of working on my concept or wanted to "collaborate," that he will help pay for a rewrite. Why did he tell me one thing and offer another? Your advice is deeply appreciated. Stan Brooks

# 8202/5/01Hi Stan. First on behalf of all the writers, thank you for your time. It's nice to have an experienced producer to solicit our questions to. I recently sent a query letter to a producer who responded favorably and asked to see my script. I sent it and he responded that he thought it "had been done before." I have several projects that I'm developing and my question is, is it in bad form to send him another letter stating he'd read X script of mine and passed but that I have Y script that may be of interest. Or for that matter to any producers that I have X script that many people have read, thought was good, but had been done many times before, but that I have Y script I think might be kinda different and they might respond to. Do you think that would help me get a foot in the door at all. Thanks for your time and all the response take out of your time to give. Monica Stan Brooks

# 7571/13/01I have written screenplays that I feel are right for the television market. In particular, one would be appropriate for the Hallmark Hall of Fame or the Disney Channel, another for the MOW market. I have tried to locate previously written scripts for these shows and have come up empty handed. Do you know how to access scripts for these markets? Any leads would be appreciated. Stan Brooks

# 74611/27/00I have initiated a television production, a six-part series, and I have gotten a commitment to broadcast from an off-market, the Caribbean region. # 73310/19/00Stan, would you be interested in a romantic baseball comedy, BIG DADDY meets AS GOOD AS IT GETS? I have A-list interest and it's out to various execs as I write. I need another producer to team up with. Best, Todd Stan Brooks

# 6968/13/00I've just co-written, and am about to produce a thriller. Budget about $5M. I'm now beginning the packaging process with an agent at Lou Coulson in the UK. It seems to me it would be a good idea to link up with an LA-based co-producer who can help achieve a LA Studio or major indie distribution deal. Do you know anyone who is either established or young-and-going-places who is looking for a hi-quality thriller (Usual Suspects meets The Sting), and to whom this proposal might appeal? I realise they're thing on the ground (all too busy, right?), but I think this is a project that will inspire interest (Gary Oldman asked to read it on basis of pitch made to him at Cannes). Kind regards, Dominic DeVine Stan Brooks

# 6928/11/00Dear Stan, Here's a good set of questions I hope you can somehow clear up one hell of a frustrated writer! Here goes, Sir: I not long ago posted questions to you regarding my option (6 months). My option expires in about a weeks time. The company in question are both partners and they have decided to split up. However, they are only working on projects in which they already have finance. Mine, they said, they are not renewing. Now both partners have gone seperate ways. One has set up another production company and another is part of the producing team in a company that finances projects. This guy in question is the in charge of finding the right projects and getting them set up with this finance/distribution company he is now part of. Now this producer who is now part of this new company that not only produces, but is also financial has said he still remains interested in the project. His words, quote: "I'm a big fan and let's wait and see what the financiers and buyers say. I still want to be attached as a producer..." it goes on to say. So what gives here? The partner in question says he still loves the script, but is with another company now and still wants to be a producer with it? This guy has made films before...reasonably successful ones, when in partnership. So, now he is on his own, or with this new company, why the renewed interest? This is crazy is it not? Not renewing ( obviously due to the company break up), yet this guy is still interested yet no offer of renewel? Could it be as it is still under current option with the old company he isn't able to renew at this moment in time under the new company as it is a "legally bound option by the old company " or what? Please help. This is nuts, Stan! I don't know what to do! Help! Thanks. Stu Stan Brooks

# 6838/9/00I have currently written a script that I would like to have looked at by a studio. What are the ways I may go about finding a place that I can submit my script to? Stan Brooks

# 6808/8/00Hi, I'm working on a screenplay at the moment, but I'm finding that I don't have much inspiration to continue it on. Same with other stories I write. Like they only get started and never get finished. I'm actually only 14, I write for fun, but I can't seem to stay on one project and complete it. Does that ever happen with you? Please help me with ideas on how I can keep motivated. If you can't help, well that's ok. Thanks---------- Christina Stan Brooks

# 6708/2/00Hi, i've registered a screenplay at SACD (France), but it's an american movie, first written in french. Do I really need to register it at WGA as some agents seem to ask ? Thanks in advance... Stan Brooks

# 6698/2/00Hi Stan Brooks, If you would kindly answer the following questions: 1- Stan Brooks

# 6688/2/00I have sent query letters to producers only to get back a lawyer letter from them saying my letter was not read. How do I approach producers and is there a listing anyplace of producers that will accept query letters? Thanks. Stan Brooks

# 6567/26/00I was wondering how long did it take you to become known in the movie and television bussiness. Stan Brooks

# 6417/17/00Hi Stan Why would a producer read my latest screenplay, say it's an intriguing read, reject it with "something I won't be able to package it properly"...and then about an hour later, I recieve another email saying he wants to talk to me more about the screenplay? I'm confused? A rejection and then not soon after he wants to talk on the phone? The producer has offices in LA, I'm in the UK, so surely he wouldn't waste his time calling if it was a straight rejection? This producer is well known in the industry and has many strong credits to his name. Is this a positive development or am I expecting too much? Any hints at the change of tune? Thanks and best wishes. Stan Brooks

# 6337/14/00I'm interested in writing for a particular television drama and have just finished a sample script. But I read that writing for a TV show absolutely requires sample scripts for other shows, as well as a completed feature film. Although this would be helpful, is it a must? Stan Brooks

# 6307/11/00Hi Stan Thanks for the "positive" and helpful replies regarding my script option and the fact it's with financiers & buyers. Will keep you posted. My fingers are crossed. Best wishes Stuart Stan Brooks

# 6156/28/00Dear Stan My script was optioned by a well known production company in February this year. It was for 6 months with an extension attached. A quick polish was performed. I heard back from the producers in May. Now they inform me it is out to financiers/buyers. What does this mean and what is the difference between the two? How soon do you hear from them? What do they look for? With the producers having made films before in Hollywood, does this increase their chances of getting what they want for my script? Also, how often do us writers check in on production companies for updates or should we wait until they call us? What about my option? If it's still out to financiers/buyers, they'll have to renew it right and pay some more money over? Hope you can clear this up for me. Best wishes. Stu Stan Brooks

# 5786/10/00My work has placed five times in prestigious screenwriting competitions, three in the last three years. Some time ago there was strong interest in one of my scripts from well known people in the industry, but they felt it needed to be more "accessible." Subsequent scripts, though acknowledged as well written, did not land me an agent or a sale. I took time away from screenwriting, although I kept writing (novel, editing.) Now I’ve rewritten the script which received the most praise, making it much more "accessible," and that script just placed in the semi-finals of one of this year’s fellowships. If prospective agents or producers like the rewritten script I send them, and then I tell them it’s a rewrite, will this automatically knock me out of the box for consideration? In short, how do I overcome a time off? What do I mention in the query letter, just the fact that I placed in all those fellowships, or that top industry people have liked my work? Stan Brooks

# 5756/9/00I have this incredible idea for a movie. I need to talk to someone about. How do you suggest I go about it. Stan Brooks

# 5666/6/00This may sound trivial, but could you elaborate on covers for screenplays? What color is prefered and what is the cover preferably to be made of? Thanks! Stan Brooks

# 5055/18/00Hello. What is the average percentage of film profit a first time screenwriter usually makes (or should ask for) after selling his script? Stan Brooks

# 4815/9/00Hello, i'm a media sudent in London, England. At the moment i am doing a module called Media Technology in Industry. For our assignment we have been given a ten minute screenplay to produce. My question to you is how do i go about finding costs for hiring a studio, camera, lighting, and sound equipment, pre-production, production and post-production staff. As well as copyright issues and insurance? I hope you can help. Stan Brooks

# 4634/27/00I wrote a screen play, and am not very sure how to write a treatment, is it the same as a summary? What should it contain? and how long should it be? Stan Brooks

# 4564/27/00Dear Stan I sent a script off to a known production company with several well known credits to their name after they had requested it from an initial query. Within a couple of weeks the producers had contacted me saying they were very interested in developing the script further. A phone conversation followed with lengthy chats on the phone regarding the script and who they were. It all felt comfortable. Within another couple of weeks I'd been sent an option for 6 months with an extension attached for a further 6 months. My option was signed ( mid Feb this year)after an entertainment atorney looked it over and my agent. However the producers supplied notes for some polishing of the script. This was done and sent back at the beginning of March. Since then I have heard nothing, except a "we will be in contact shortly.." It's now the end of April and I still haven't heard anything and I am growing concerned. What should I do? I've emailed them with no response and even left a couple of messages on their answering machine or with assistants...still they haven't returned my calls. I am at my wits end. Have they just dropped the project? Please, as a producer, please explain to me if possible why this is? Is this the normal response or lack of you expect as a writer? I am frustrated as after all the initial hurry and excitement it all seems to have gone flat. Please help! Stu Stan Brooks

# 23011/8/99 I recently visited a web site that gave out important "tips" for aspiring screenwriters. It seemed to me, though, that they were just trying to sell their book instead of actually helping. They would tell about all the things that if not done correctly would surely lead to rejection, but you have to buy the book to find out the proper way. One of the main concerns I had about their tips was one regarding printers. They said that you need a 300 dot per inch LaserJet printer to be taken seriously. You can't use an ink jet or dot matrix printer when submitting scripts. Is this really true? I ask because the printer I own (and recently bought) is an ink jet printer. I would hate to buy a new expensive printer if I don't need to. Please set the record straight. Stan Brooks

# 1309/24/99Dear Mr. Brooks, I'm a forty-one year old 'new' writer. I've recently been approached by several production companies who have seen the loglines for my feature-length scripts posted on the Internet. The companies normally request a one page synopsis of my script...and that's where I seem to run into trouble. I'm thinking that they want to know details to be able to estimate costs, etc., but it's very hard to compress all those details into one page. Am I off track? How detailed does the synopsis need to be? What type of information is the production company really looking for? Thank you very much for your time, Jerry Kolata Stan Brooks

# 558/12/99Hi Stan, I have a screenplay that has been well-received. The writing is good, people love the characters and dialogue. But the most frequent comment I hear is, "This would be perfect for Lifetime." Others have mentioned the story's possible incarnation as a TV movie. So, even though I'm sick to death of the story by now, I am considering converting it to a standard TV format. The problem is, I don't know what that is or even where I can find a sample. I've looked at and bought several books on screenwriting, but none really show the TV format. Do you have any suggestions on where I could find a sample spec for TV? Thanks, Susan Stan Brooks

# 247/21/99I am in my mid forties and make a sizeable income writing for a living, though I have never written a screenplay. I would now like to try, if only so that in years to come I won't be saying "what if?" My question is, in the unlikely event of one of my screenplays being good enough, does Hollywood's obsession with youth preclude the idea of my film being made? If so, I'd rather not waste my time. I'd be grateful for your thoughts. Stan Brooks
